[1][2] Russell, who was born to the black father and white mother, is bi-racial and was raised mostly on her mother's side of the family. She stated that her skin color was the primary reason why she was excluded by her peers when she was a child. The family was struggling financially and had to move 16 times to work for her father. Russell admitted that, despite the hardships they faced, there was always an possibility to reinvent and develop something new. Russell's parents faced financial hardship and she was constantly moving. At eighteen, she took her first acting class and finally found her place. She borrowed money from her job to purchase an automobile and travel to Los Angeles to audition. If her funds ran out then she would go back home to work, until she was able to earn enough to audition again. This was the way she worked for four years, until she was offered her first television role.
